One benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by – Jeannette Wallis
The last three weeks have looked pretty much the same – me sitting on the couch trying to memorize what bone remolding is and the co-factors related to calcium. Thankfully, those days are now over and I’m officially a Nutritional Therapist! What the what!? You have no idea how much joy I get from seeing NTP next to my name. It was such a long and hard journey but one that I would do over again in a heartbeat. With this new title change, there will also be some changes coming to Young, Broke and Hungry. I’ll still be focusing on providing delicious healthy recipes but with a dose of lifestyle wellness mixed in. These past 9 months I’ve learned a ton and knowledge is meant to be shared.
Today, I’m kicking off the best season of the year with 5 Transformative Wellness Books to Read this Summer. If you’re like me, relaxation comes in the form of a good novel and a glass of wine. Enjoy!
Jo Robison is a bestselling investigative journalist who has spent the last 15 years gathering information on how we can restore vital nutrients to our fruit, meat, vegetable and dairy products. Eating on the Wild Side is an incredibly fascinating book that tells you exactly what you should be eating for optimal nutrition. It also explains simple ways to prepare and store your food so that none of those nutrients are lost. If you’re a food nerd, who loves to know the history behind what you’re eating, then this book is for you.
Come as You Are: The Surprising New Science that Will Transform Your Sex Life, Emily Nagoski, Ph.D
Human sexuality is a vast and complicated subject that Emily Nagoski tackles with grace in her novel Come as You Are. She explores why and how women’s sexuality works – based on groundbreaking research and brain science. Broken down into 4 sections, this novel is easy to grasp and a fun informative read that sheds light on how to get the sex life you want.
Love Warrior (Oprah’s Book Club): A Memoir, Glennon Doyle Melton
Glennon’s new memoir is a voyeuristic look into her failing marriage. To be honest, this novel felt a little too candid, like I wanted to shut my eyes and cringe at different points in the story. However, Glennon’s writing is beautifully poetic, raw and heartbreaking all rolled into one binge worthy package. I read Love Warrior in one day and highly recommend it.
The Mind Gut Connection is a book that everyone should read. Emeran Mayer writes about the connections our brains have with our guts, especially with microbes that call it home. This thoughtful guide redefines what it means to be healthy and provides the means to manifest this goal.
Yes – another gut book. But did you know that 70 – 80% of our entire immune system resides in the gut? Having good gut health is the first step of any wellness journey. In his latest book, Dr. Josh Axe identifies five main gut types and offers customized plans, including diet, lifestyle, and supplements.
