For three months after I first moved to Capitol Hill, I would walk by this nondescript building, curious to what it was. A Burger King? An underground food movement? My mind would go wild with possibilities until finally my friend filled me in. It was Rancho Bravo, a fast food Mexican restaurant. The term fast food has a negative connotation attached to it and doesn’t always mean previously frozen burgers. In this case, Rancho Bravo dishes up fresh Mexican food, all made in house. Residing in an old KFC, the décor doesn’t scream date night. Vinyl plastic booths and dingy white walls still have touches from the former friend chicken giant. A menu hangs over the cash register with prices ranging from $1.25 to $ 8.25. Whenever I visit, I get the Rancho Bravo Burrito ($6.25) with carne asada and a large horchata ($1.25), which usually fills me up till the next day. Open till 3 am on Friday and Saturday, it is a late night option when your head is spinning and your stomach is grumbling.
